I Garagista di sorgono

Three friends, three grapes, and the desire to continue to make wines in the traditional way, following the teachings of their ancestors. Pietro Uras, Simone Murru & Renzo Manca decided to join forces to vinify the Cannonau, Monica and Muristeddu grapes from vineyards planted around the village of Sorgono, the geographical centre of Sardinia. The bush tree old vines (60-80 years) are planted on decomposed granitic soil at 550m altitude: the perfect conditions to create wines incredibly classic and true to their terroir, but with a remarkable freshness and elegance that makes them stand out in the somehow sleepy area of Mandrolisai.

Rosso Mandrolisai ‘Garage’

This is a bright and juicy expression: the estate-grown grapes are fermented with the native yeasts and aged just for 6 months in stainless steel. An intensely fruity red that can be served slightly chilled.

Monica DOC ‘Murru’

100% Monica from three small parcels owned and farmed by Simone Murru. The vineyards are between 70 and 100 years old, and all are bush-trained. Yields are super low, providing for remarkable concentration. Monica is an ancient local variety, perhaps of Spanish origin, and provides for wines that are silky and rich in aromas fine herbs, mirtle and underbrush.

Bovale IGT ‘Parisi’

100% Bovale Sardo, a traditional grape variety of Sardinia, probably related to the Spanish Graciano. “Parisi” means “together”: the grapes for this wine come from Pietro, Simone and Renzo (the “Garagisti”) organically farmed 50-80 years old, bush-trained vines. Fermented with its own yeasts and aged 12 months in used French barriques, this is a concentrated yet polished expression, offering tons of wild berry aromas and a polished, clean finish.

Canonau DOC ‘Manca’

100% Cannonau from three single parcels owned and farmed organically by Renzo Manca. The white and pink granite soils provide for a vibrant freshness even if Cannonau’s naturally bold body clocks in at nearly 16% Alcohol. We have never tasted a Cannonau (aka Grenache or Garnacha) like this one: intensely complex and solidly structured and yet light in color and so well balanced. The sea breezes that make it all the way to the Mandrolisai keep this wine vibrant and lively, highlighting all the classic notes of this quintessential Mediterranean grape variety.

Rosso Mandrolisai ‘Uras’

A blend of 80+ years old vines Bovale Sardo (aka Muristeddu), 30% Cannonau and 30% Monica, hand harvested and de-stemmed, then fermented with native yeasts. Matured for 1 year in neutral French oak. Deep and concentrated, this Sardinian red is a masterclass in balance, proving that elegance and strength can go hand in hand. Streaked with minerality and brimming with notes of scorched earth, baked black fruit, eucalyptus and wild scrub it ripples with raw power yet retains its poise.
