Villa Calicantus

On the morainic hills above Lake Garda, Villa Calicantus is Daniele and Chiara Delaini's thoughtful attempt to restore Bardolino’s reputation as a light framed but seriously nuanced red, rooted in Daniele's family’s historic property. Since reviving the estate in 2011, they have rejected chemical shortcuts, farming the now 8 hectares organically and then biodynamically as part of the Co.Vi.Bio growers’ group, with Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara forming the classic Veronese blend. The breezy, lake cooled slopes and poor, stony soils naturally favour finesse over power, and Daniele and Chiara lean into this, keeping yields low and picking for freshness rather than brute ripeness. In the cellar, grapes ferment with their own yeasts, often over long, unhurried periods, before ageing in a mix of concrete and old wood; there is no filtration, and interventions are kept to a minimum, resulting in Bardolino that feels more like a finely scented, gently savoury lakeside cru than the simple quaffer the denomination is still too often assumed to be.

‘Lassuperiora in Bianco’ – da uve rosse

The most classic assemblage of Bardolinos red grapes, Corvina, rondinella and Molinara, vinified blanc de noir. The grapes for this cuvée come from the winery's highest parcels, where the soil of sand and stones provide a unique mineral profile and a sharp freshness. a wine that sits somewhere between what you'd expect from the region and something entirely new. There's a subtle texture and weight you don't usually find in Italian whites, alongside bright acidity and clean, fresh minerality.

Bardolino ‘Soracuna’

SORACUNA is the “daily” red. The grapes come from three parcels located in the hills just above Bardolino. Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara and a pinch of Merlot, fermented and refined in concrete tanks, as they used to in the past.
The name SORACUNA comes from two words of the local dialect ” SORA ” and ” CUNA ” meaning ” ABOVE ” and ” BABY COT”: “going for SORA CUNA”, in their village, means going to a party at the house of a new born.
2017 was the first year of production of this wine and in 2017 Anna, their daughter, was born: so they decided to name this wine as a celebration!

Bardolino Superiore ‘Lassuperiora’

A co-harvest of Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, and Sangiovese. From parcels that Daniele rents and has full control of. The site is in the zone known as Pastrengo. the highest hill in the Bardolino zone, at around 200m and just west of the Adige river, which separates Bardolino from Valpolicella.  Daniele feels that this vineyard produces more “serious,” structured wines capable of long élèvage and potential for aging. The wine macerates for one month on its skins in concrete vats before being racked to barrels where it ages for 6 months.

Bardolino Chiaretto ‘Chiar’otto’

A unique expression of Bardolino Chiaretto that combines minerality, complexity and drinkability in a wine thats both old and new at the same time. Chiar’otto is the first rosé fermented and aged in barrels in the Bardolino area.

The name CHIAR ‘ OTTO comes from the italian name “CHIARA” who, along with Daniele, is the heart of Villa Calicantus, and “OTTO”, the italian number 8, that is the month in which Anna, the daughter of Chiara and Daniele was born.
